Abstract

Highlights
• Messaging increased likelihood of locking up firearms for suicide prevention.

• It also increased likelihood of participants engaging their family physician to help prevent suicide.

• Effects were stronger for political conservatives and gun rights advocates.

• Perceived value similarity between message source and recipient mediated effects.

• Health behaviors were facilitated when regarded as consistent with cultural values.
