Abstract

In road carriage, when needed, vehicles of categories M1 and N1 and trailers of categories O1 and O2 are used for transport of common goods. These trailers are either unbraked or braked by overrun brake system. In both cases, the towing vehicle's braking performance is affected by the trailer. This article deals with the comparison of the change in braking performance of a motor vehicle of category M1 when the trailer is equipped or unequipped with the overrun brake system. In particular, the mean fully developed deceleration, the braking distance and the braking time, as well as the individual deceleration diagrams are compared. This article should point out the need of driver's behavior change in situations when the trailer is attached to the vehicle, as well as the importance of the correct distribution of load and not exceeding the maximum weight of the trailer and the combination of vehicles.
