Abstract

A software tool for assisting roadway designers in assessing the safeness of roadside designs is described. The SafetyAdvisor is an interactive Windows 3.0 program that graphically displays the roadway and hazardous objects along it. The probability of observing no severe or fatal accidents in a year is used as a measure of the safety of the roadway. This measure is calculated using user-definable probabilistic expressions. The SafetyAdvisor provides a convenient computational framework for estimating the effectiveness of different roadway design alternatives.
