Abstract

A life-cycle cost model is developed to evaluate a proposed rural Advanced Traveler Information System (ATIS). Costs used in this model include capital investment (in equipment and facilities as well as installation), and operation and maintenance costs. A cost-benefit analysis is reported. System benefits are equated to potential reduction in the number of accidents that occur while the ATIS is in place. Sensitivity analysis is performed on both its costs and benefits. The approach is useful for evaluating Intelligent Vehicle Highway System applications as well as for exploring trade-offs among proposed technologies for the application.
