Abstract

Lattice towers are extensively used in communication networks. The baseplate of a lattice tower plays a vital role in the structural integrity of the tower as it acts as an interface between the tower body and tower foundation. Baseplates of the lattice towers of communication networks, which are generally anchored with four bolts, would be subjected to uplifting forces as the governing conditions. Hence, the behaviour could be different to conventional column baseplates of buildings. Furthermore, the shape of tower members, which usually consist of "L" angles, is different to the shapes of the structural members of columns in buildings. Hence, most of the conventional baseplate design guidelines are not applicable for lattice towers. The primary objective of the study presented was to develop design formulae based on the yield line theory to find the appropriate minimum thickness requirements of a baseplate held by four bolts. The experimental and numerical validation is presented in detail.
