Abstract

Dear 2nd Lt Janet Crebassa-Brown,

Thank you for your thoughtful and personal letter. Your observations on the impact of being post-partum in the military not only emphasize the importance of further research, but also highlight potential aspects of service that were not mentioned in our literature review and thus may not have been studied at all. Specifically, environmental exposures, command and peer expectations of post-partum women, personal expectations of post-partum women, and career implications.

The novel contextual aspects you highlight also emphasizes the importance of command. While it can be tempting to assume that post-partum depression is a medical problem, your observations and the findings in our literature review indicate that much of the risk factors for PDD can be mitigated by command. Additional work to update policies and attitudes regarding pregnancy in the military is needed...
