Abstract

Since a high proportion of bicycle accidents at signalized intersections occur when vehicles are turning left, it is important to investigate the situation of bicycle accidents at signalized intersections. This paper analyzes near-miss events between bicycles and left-turn vehicles using data recorded by drive recorders classifying the complexity of the situation and examining the causes of incidents. As a result, it was shown that the risk-taking behaviors of bicyclists were observed in detail and the factors that induce the lack of safety confirmation of left-turn vehicle drivers were identified, and the decision-making process and interaction between them were hypothesized. The results of this study are expected to contribute to the prevention of bicycle accidents with left-turn vehicles on roadways.
