Abstract

Driver Assistance Systems support the driver in very different ways. The systems have in common the potential to enhance the efficiency of road transport (e.g. by avoiding accidents). Therefore politics show significant interest in Driver Assistance Systems. In order to provide politics with a scientifically based orientation about the usefulness of these systems, Cost-Benefit-Analyses are often carried out. The following article presents calculations and results of Cost-Benefit-Analyses for a Stop-and-Go-Assistant and a Lane Change Assistant. It can be demonstrated that the use of the analyzed systems can produce a considerable benefit surplus that should be used for transport political reasons. Obstacles partly consist of high prices of the systems. A political promotion could be taken into consideration. Further aspects, for example the employment potential due to the production of the systems, speak in favor of an active support of the market penetration of Driver Assistance Systems.
