Abstract

The commander in the Prince George's County (MD) Fire investigation Unit detected prospective attack of an arsonist in the Metropolitan region of Washington while comparing notes with another commander during a promotional exam. The commanders noticed that the region was experiencing a series of similar-type fires, which was not unusual as both fire departments were neighbors and responded to thousands of working working fires every year. They noticed that the difference in this case was that these fires seemed to be similar in terms time, always occurred at single-family homes, and they were set at or near an entrance area of a porch or deck. Both investigators contacted agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) and asked them to come and look at the information they possessed. The task force were subsequently able to identify that the suspect was a current or former member of the Marine Corps or had strong ties to the Corps.
