Abstract

Mass shootings and acts of terrorism are becoming increasingly common across the U.S. This study evaluated the emotional arousal, active coping response, and physiological response related to the Pulse Nightclub shooting in a group of college students using the Terrorism Emotional Arousal Measure (TEAM). In the process of norming the questionnaire, 35 students completed the TEAM both prior to the event and two days after the shooting. The means of the overall score and two of the three domains increased. There was a statistically significant difference in means on the physiological reactivity domain before and after the Pulse Nightclub shooting, although there was a small effect size. This study uniquely illustrates responses to a domestic terrorist attack.
