Abstract

Highlights

• This meta-analysis examined the predictors of suicide-related behaviors by three different outcomes which was suicidal ideation, suicide attempts and suicide death.

• Twenty-nine predictors (ten for suicidal ideation, thirteen for suicide attempts and six for suicide death) from 24 cohort studies covering 954,822 participants with major depressive disorders were identified in this study.

• Previous suicidal behaviors were associated with suicidal ideation, suicide attempts and suicide death, respectively. Stressful life events and negative family factors were associated with suicidal ideation and suicide attempts. Males with major depressive disorder were at higher risk of suicide death than females (combined HR=3.27, 95% CI: 1.55, 6.90).
