Abstract

Suicide is an important public health problem, which can have great impacts on the families, communities, and even the whole society. As a high-risk group of suicides, the suicide rate in cancer patients deserves special concern. Previous studies regarding suicides in cancer patients were mainly from European or American countries (Henson et al., 2019, Zaorsky et al., 2019). Although 77% of suicides are from low- and middle-income countries, there have been limited relevant studies from these countries including China. Given the relative shortage of comprehensive cancer survivorship care and the sky-high economic burden of cancer patients in China, we hypothesized that the suicide risk might be much higher in Chinese cancer patients than in those from high-income countries.
