Abstract

Highlights

• We observe N = 2180 motorists' driving speed in school environments.
• Car velocity decreases as a function of the number of pedestrians and cyclists that are present, i.e., 'safety in numbers'.
• The effect is stronger for pedestrians wearing fluorescent gear, i.e., 'safety in fluorescent numbers'.
