Abstract

This paper reviews and presents in tabular form statistics of types of injuries caused in road traffic accidents, with emphasis on the lower limb. The approaches used to prevent injuries are also outlined. Tables containing the following data are presented: (a) percentage of accident victims sustaining fractures by location of fracture and road user type; (b) percentage of victims sustaining bone fracture by body site (drivers and front seat passengers); (c) fatality from road traffic accidents by road user type; (d) frequency of injury to the lower limb (drivers, front seated passengers, and motorcyclists; (e) average duration of stay in hospital by main injury category; (f) type of injury sustained by drivers and front seated passengers. The causes of accidents are listed briefly, and the approaches used to prevent injuries are outlined. Special emphasis is put on the use of seat belts, on car design and, for motorcyclists, on the use of thick protective clothing. (TRRL)
