Abstract

The author outlines research being undertaken by the Nizhnij Novgorad Research Institute into Traffic Medicine. Current studies include: a) drivers' work capacity (ie the factors which influence the length of time that people continue to drive effectively without a break; b) health problems; c) the prevention of monotony; d) traffic safety; and e) driver protection, including both passive and active vehicle safety. Of particular interest is the relationship between the driver, the automobile and the traffic environment (the 'DAT system'). With the majority of accidents being due to driver error a general theory of drivers' reliability is being sought. A qualitative assessment is given of the effects upon professional drivers of a variety of factors including: noise; vibration; microclimate; health; diet; age; and clothing worn.

FINDINGS relating to diseases are briefly outlined. Long-term psychophysiological studies are described on which training programmes have been based.
