Abstract

Details are given of a study carried out to evaluate the extent of alcohol-impaired driver involvement in fatal accidents in the USA. The analysis uses fatal accident data obtained from the Fatal Accident Reporting System (FARS) for 1980. Of the 45284 fatal accidents recorded it was found that 40.3 percent involved at least one driver judged to be alcohol impaired. Statistics quoted show that only 36.7 percent of drivers involved in accidents were tested for blood alcohol levels and of these over 50 percent had BAC levels above the 0.10 percent dwi (driving while intoxicated) limit. Tables are included which show patterns of accident involvement for varying driver age groups and BAC levels. It is shown that young drivers of under 24 yrs, concerned in fatal accidents, tend to be disproportionately involved in lower BAC levels while older drivers of over 50 yrs showed less involvement with alcohol than all other drivers.
