Abstract

This paper examines how successful are today's traffic simulators in implementing intelligence in their vehicle-driver agents. It reviews the model components in the microsimulation models used in Australia, and highlights those elements that need further refinement to make them more adaptable to the changing conditions experienced during congested traffic conditions. The following driving tasks are recommended for further research: route modification due to congestion without information; lane selection, lane changing and merging; car following during queue discharge at signalised intersections, reactions to lane change; and gap acceptance under congested flow conditions, priority sharing and forcing.
