Abstract

This paper traces the nature and extent of transport research effort, and details some of the key contributions made to road research in Australia (principally at ARRB). It notes the change in emphasis and in attitudes to transport research from the 1970s to the present. The paper concludes that road research in Australia has been and continues to be a wise and fruitful investment. The research has been translated into practice and it has produced practical benefits, including the development of a skilled body of people.
