Abstract

This paper summarizes the features of ground damage to residential fills due to the 1995 Hyogo-ken Nanbu Earthquake in Japan. Many residential lands suffered ground damage to various extents in the earthquake event. Permanent deformation took place in gently-sloping residential fills. Some slopes as gentle as four degrees exhibited landslide-like downward movements from dozens to hundreds of centimeters, so on. It is suggested that liquefaction might be a dominant factor for displacements in gently-inclined residential fills.
