Abstract

VioLit summary:

OBJECTIVE:
The purpose of this study by Silver et al. was to provide evidence that a cycle of violence exits by documenting three generations of abusive families.

METHODOLOGY:
This longitudinal study was conducted between 1963 and 1967 in the District of Columbia. The records of 34 cases of child abuse reported to Social Services or the Women's Bureau of the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia were studied and analyzed. The records provided information about the abuse taking place within the families from 1963 to 1967 and provided family history and background information. Case summaries and some percentages were used to analyze the data.

FINDINGS/DISCUSSION:
There appeared to be much abuse within most of these families: more than half of the families reported abuse between the parents; abuse appeared previous to 1963 in 15 of the families; more than one abusive incident toward a child had been reported in 20 of the 34 families; despite some intervention, abuse continued in 12 of the families between 1963 and 1967. Four case reports were detailed where the abuser in the family had been abused himself/herself as a child. Seven of the case reports were detailed where the abused children had become involved in delinquency during the four years. The story of child abuse experienced by Sirhan Sirhan, the assassin of Robert F. Kennedy was also detailed as an example of the cycle of violence.

AUTHORS' RECOMMENDATIONS:
The authors suggested that physicians must be aware and alert to the signals of then-newly defined child abuse syndrome. (CSPV Abstract - Copyright © 1992-2007 by the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence, Institute of Behavioral Science, Regents of the University of Colorado)
