Abstract

A pilot program named the Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) program has shown that it is effective and practical to implement in a hectic ED. Here are some reasons to consider such an alcohol intervention in your ED: You virtually can eliminate return visits due to alcohol-related injuries. Regular use of this intervention can make your staff more adept at discussing this sensitive topic with patients. It generally takes five to seven minutes to conduct the screening, so it will not significantly tie up your staff.
