Abstract

Ever since ancient times man has tried to protect himself from the more
serious effects of mechanical violence. The use of primitive types of armour
can be traced at least as far back as about 1500 B.C. This indicates that
people at that time must have had some idea about one of the basic
principles for injury prevention. They obviously understood that the serious
effects of a concentrated blow could be reduced by distributing the forces
over a larger area.
