Abstract

Two data sets containing detailed AIS trauma codes were utilized to test the Injury Severity Score and to develop an improved method for relating AIS codes to mortality. Using logistic regression analysis the properties of an excellent "Probability of Death Score" were defined. As compared to the Injury Severity Score the Probability of Death Score 1) is based on a finer division of the body into regions, 2) is not limited to the use of just one AIS code per body region, 3) includes a precise age factor, 4) utilizes weighted rather than squared AIS codes, and 5) incorporates two rather than three AIS codes. The Probability of Death Score was statistically superior to the Injury Severity Score on both data sets. The marked tendency for the Injury Severity Score to disregard relevant AIS codes was analyzed.
