Abstract

Professional boxers are recruited from among the youth of the lower socioeconomic levels. Their changing ethnic composition reflects the ethnic shifts in the urban lower socioeconomic levels. Fighting is an important road to increased social status, and successful boxers are role-models of the youth. Trainers, managers, and promoters view boxing in different ways from the boxers and frequently affect boxer's careers.
