Abstract

This paper sets the scene by exploring what is meant by ‘crime in the city’ and the implications of different concepts (crime risk, crime opportunities, fear of crime) in terms of measurement, analysis and policy responses. Particular attention is paid to relationships between ‘crime’ (however defined), land use and the social environment. The subtle relationship between risk and fear of crime is examined and the role of other influences on people's perceptions and experiences (e.g. antisocial behaviour) is discussed.
