Abstract

Background: The burns by inhalation are generally the result of the inhalation of very hot gas and products of an incomplete combustion with clinical demonstrations are variables and that require of an immediate processing. Objective: To calculate the frequency of inhalation burns in pediatric patients in the University Hospital of Puebla´s Burn Unit, during period between January 2000 to January 2005. Material and methods: Descriptive study, observational, longitudinal, retrospective and retrolective. In pediatric patients with inhalation burns that had been in the University Hospital of Puebla's Burn Unit. It was used descriptive statistics and central tendency units, quantitative variables were expressed in percentage. Results: The pediatric burn patients total incomes to the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery service in the study’s period was 535 patients, 325 (60.7%) were male gender and 210 patients (39.2%) female gender. Fifty night patients (10.14%) had inhalation burns, 50 patients of these accomplish with the inclusion criteria for the study, of these 34 patients (68%) were male sex and 16 patients (32%) were female sex. The most affected group was between 5 and 10 years old with 25 patients. The place where the lesion occurred with more frequency was in the house (76%). The diagnostic method more utilized was Clinic criteria, because it was utilized in the 100% of patients. Forty five patients improvement and five patients died. Principal mortality causes were Sepsis, Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome and Multiple Organ Failure Syndrome. Conclusion: The frequency of burns by inhalation found in the study is over it referred in the literature which would be able due to that the Unit of Burned of the University Hospital of Populates is a burned patients reference place.
