Abstract

In this study, the symbolic construction of the cinematographic reality about the Alawite mind-set encapsulated the world of meaning of the movie "One Voice Splits the Night", was analysed. Roots of symbolic/representational reality about the Alawite mind-set constructed in the world of meaning of the above-mentioned film, was determined as the main research question of the study. This study aims to reveal linguistic tools, strategies and practices used to construct the symbolic/representational reality about the Alawite mind-set rooted in the world of meaning of the aforementioned film. For this purpose, figurative, implicit and connotative meanings of signs and sign systems selected and used for the construction of representational reality about the Alawite mind-set were analysed. This research was conducted with an exploratory and descriptive perspective based on a qualitative research design, as well as interpretive and cultural research paradigms. The analysis method of this study is based on the "semiotic analysis model" of Roland Barthes. The study has revealed that values and phenomena such as humanism, justice, enlightenment, social hierarchy, extra familial brotherhood, loyalty and respect for tradition, shunner/shunning, death, suicide, decency and rules of good manners shape reference points on the belief system of the Alawite mindset and are represented in the form of symbolic constructions throughout the film. On the other hand, a narrative level for the implicit structure of the meaning is constructed in the movie by using signs, myths and symbols which are the most basic components of the cinematographic meaning. In this context, through their social milieus, their worlds of belief and ideology cinematographic realities about the lives of S a and ̄smail, the two main narrative characters of the movie, were created. Implicit meanings included the signs and symbols like Hz. Ali, Jem house, assembly of saint, posts of sofuluk/dedelik, rules and conventions, baʇlama, Zulfiqar-double-edged sword of Hz. Ali-, the mythical connotation of belonging to Haci Bektash Veli by a dove carried a mythic meaning, serve the symbolic construction of a cinematographic reality about the Alawite mind-set.
