Abstract

The work of the National Coal Board on underground communicaions is a result of the Creswell Colliery disaster. The disaster had two main causes: firstly, the ignition of a rubber conveyor belt with the consequent emission of poisonous gases, and, secondly, failure to communicate to the men in the pit the degree of the emergency.
