Abstract

The McKinleyville bridge in West Virginia is the first known application of FRP rebars to reinforce the concrete deck. It was built as a research demonstration project under a partnership involving the U.S. Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratories (CERL), the West Virginia University Constructed Facilities Center (CFC), and the West Virginia Department of Transportation. Partners shared the cost of the project under the Construction Productivity Advancement Research Program (CPAR), which allows Corps of Engineers laboratories to join forces with private industry to do mutually beneficial research. The CPAR project demonstrated FRP rebars in a full scale bridge deck to document the design, construction, and real-world performance of this material.
