Abstract

This article provides an overview of a new light-rail system, 20 miles long and with 28 stations, that began revenue service in Arizona, linking the cities of Phoenix, Tempe, and Mesa. The system's light-rail vehicle is its most visible aspect and contains many modern, innovative features, many of which are unique in the United States. This 70% low-floor vehicle, designed to reflect the needs of the specific operating environment found in Phoenix (high temperature and a high level of street running), contains many technical improvements over similar vehicles and is described in some detail.
