Abstract

Analyses of the risk of severe of fatal household injury or rising from a product defect frequently fail to consider the probability of the users discovering the defect and setting the product aside before such an event occurs. This paper demonstrates two methods of analyzing defect associated risk. The first, which ignores the possibility of user discovery of the defect and consequent set-aside, results in a high probability of fatal injury occurrence. The second analysis, which takes into consideration several mechanisms for user discovery of defects, establishes a much lower probability of serious or fatal injury, regardless of product lifetime or number of use exposures.
