Abstract

Some recent studies of manual materials handling activities are reviewed, and current information on the effects of several task variables on workers' materials handling performance is summarized. Emphasis is placed on task variables that appear relevant to establishing guidelines to safeguard workers from overexertion injuries. The reviewed studies were based on three approaches: psychophysical, physiological, or biomechanical. Although they often lead to similar conclusions, there is considerable disagreement among the three approaches regarding the effects of certain task variables on manual materials handling performance. Also cited is new evidence indicating that training enhances an individual's capacity to perform manual materials handling tasks.
