Abstract

This study is a report of five selected state boating accident reporting systems. Each system was evaluated in terms of 10 criteria. Major findings are that the present recreational boating accident reporting system depends for raw data almost entirely on voluntary unverified reports by operators of recreational small craft, making the reliability of the reports suspect. The voluntary reporting also results in the underreporting of many accidents, particularly nonfatal and property damage. Recommendations for alternatives to the present system of collecting accident data are made.
