Abstract

The various modes of failure relevant to structural engineering are discussed, and brief summaries given of the methods of investigation and conclusions for some examples of such failures in steelwork structures. An examination of the contributory causes of structural failures in steel buildings, bridges and cranes shows that in the vast majority of cases there have been several technical factors involved, but that in general there has been a failure to communicate or use existing information rather than a lack of research knowledge.
