Abstract

This paper considers the legal requirements of pesticide manufacturers in terms of providing appropriate information to the user of a pesticide to give him adequate guidance on any possible hazards to the user's health or safety when handling the product. It also discusses the adequacy of current guidance given on product labels, viz "wear suitable protective clothing", and considers the problems of providing more detailed information in the light of existing regulatory constraints.Recommendations are put forward as to how the subject may be developed further. In particular, it is suggested that there should be some form of generic classification of protective clothing according to certain types of pesticide formulations. This may be a numeric/star or other type of coding system, similar to that being introduced in West Germany. It is suggested that standard tests be introduced for protective clothing manufacturers, using a series of common formulation substances and that ultimately this should aim to the introduction of approved standards for clothing labelling. Where necessary, pesticide manufacturers may need to consider performing tests on a range of protective clothing to ascertain the most suitable for their particular formulation under foreseeable circumstances of use.
