Abstract

The role and training needs of safety personnel in both E.E.C. countries are reviewed with particular reference to the chemical and petrochemical industry, and the German situation is compared with U.K. practice. The approach to occupational safety in the German chemical industry is analysed together with the organisations and regulations based on statutory law. Safety performance of the chemical industries of both countries is compared in relation to safety professionals' work and training in the context of the legal duties for and technical and organisational approaches to the control of danger. The conclusions, discussing the preparedness of both industries to put innovations in the field of chemical process safety into practice, present recommendations and suggestions to the policy-makers of both countries, both in the educational sphere and in chemical industry management.
