Abstract

The assessment and quantification of risk in the process industry was developed from reliability technology which tends to focus on the hardware aspects of potential plant/system failures. The human factor receives little or no attention despite the fact that human error can play a significant role in many plant safety and reliability assessment. Human performance modelling and analysis are still being developed and require special expert judgement from psychologists, human factor specialists and engineers.This paper will examine the use of Expert Systems as a tool to assist the analyst in the modelling of human reliability within the overall framework of Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA). A computer based approach is presented which utilises quantified expert judgement, through task analysis and decision making trees. A case study is used to demonstrate the computer model.
