Abstract

When a safety analysis in a metal factory was carried out attention was also paid to occupational hygienic conditions. In particular, recommendations based on the safety analysis and occupational hygienic survey must support each other and avoid conflicts between aspects of safety analysis and aspects of occupational hygiene.The highest level, frequency distributions, and impulsiveness of noise as well as the acoustic properties of the hall were clarified. Temperatures and the moving rates of air were measured. Both air motion and the pressure ratios between the rooms were demonstrated by marking smoke. The illumination of different working areas was measured. A measure of the impurities discharged by the painting tunnel was evaluated by marking smoke and by approximate measuring of the hydrocarbon content.In conclusion, it would be necessary and possible to reduce noise. This could partly be done at the same time as machine guards and safety devices are installed according to the recommendations of the safety analysis.The recommendations had to serve both existing conditions and a possible new workplace. This made the occupational hygienic survey still more necessary as a part of the safety analysis.
