Abstract

In late 1981 the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration accepted the final technical report of an HSRI study it had been sponsoring for six years, since October, 1975. The purpose of the study was to assess the safety effects of FMVSS 121. Standard 121, put into effect in January, 1975, included a provision that new airbraked trucks sold after that date be capable of braking to a controlled stop from 60 mph in a distance of no more than 245 feet. The rationale was that trucks capable of braking that rapidly would be involved in fewer traffic accidents. The HSRI study examined that question by collecting and analyzing data concerning accident involvements of trucks built before and after Standard 121 vehicles in use during calendar years 1976-1978 had a rate of accident involvement significantly lower or higher than that of comparable pre-121 vehicles. The study conclusions are those of the author and not necessarily those of the NHTSA.
