Abstract

Clinical-anatomical comparisons were performed for 65 patients 1-2 days--40 years after chemical gastric trauma. Morphological evaluation of the biopsy, operative and sectional specimens provided follow-up evidence on regeneration of the gastric wall layers exposed to chemical agents. The recovery of the gastric mucosa occurred in the near 3 months after its injury largely by the lining epithelium producing mucus. Cicatrization of the gastric wall promoted progressive mucosal atrophy resulting in a year in pronounced atrophic gastritis persistent for decades. These findings correlated with the clinical evidence. The alterations observed can give rise to the onset of a malignant process in the stomach exposed to chemical hazard.
