Abstract

Paint characteristics of traffic or zone paints are reviewed. They have become a major item of expenditure for highway departments with their increasing mileages and with the increase in traffic using the highways. Differences between traffic paints and other paints are enumerated. In general, traffic paints consist of quick-drying-varnish vehicle, pigments, ester gum, or gum copals, volatile thinners, and driers combined in various proportions and by various processes to achieve traffic paints with varying properties. A test program is presented which was designed as a comparative physical test of paints on kentucky roads. The results of an accelerated-abrasion test are presented which was conducted on a circular track road testing machine in the highway materials research laboratory. Reflectorized paints with applied beads give greater permanence than paints. This testing program is proving of value and will be continued.
