Abstract

The history of the establishment and development of the General Motors proving ground is partially reviewed from the viewpoint of proving ground objectives. Details are given of the automotive proving ground road system design. The automotive proving ground road system design uses the same principles as public highway design. The emphasis is different in that more severe operating conditions are required and feasible. They are required because of the opportunity to train drivers and supervise operations. This results in greater emphasis on detail design refinement to extend service life. Appendices present design of a horizontal transition spiral, vertical curves for spiral easement, and superelevated cross-section in a spiral easement.
