Abstract

This paper examines accident and injury data on 3,203 automobiles involved in injury-producing accidents to determine effects which speed may have on the frequency of dangerous or fatal injuries. The examination consists of four substudies: (1) the frequency distributions of the cars according to traveling and impact speeds in progressive ranges of 10 mph, (2) the frequency of dangerous or fatal occupant injury in each of the progressive traveling and impact speed ranges, (3) the extent to which rigid control of traveling speed would reduce the frequency of dangerous or fatal injuries, and (4) the influence which factors other than speed ejection, seat area occupied, site of impact have on the incidence of dangerous and fatal injuries.
