Abstract

As the current violence in Karachi can attest, Pakistan is struggling with the issues of ethnicity and nationalism. As the government in Islamabad attempts to hold Pakistan together against the pull of ethnic separatism, it finds it must deal with peoples who often feel little allegiance to the concept of a greater Pakistan. This article examines the major ethnic groups that together constitute modern Pakistan and addresses the issues that have brought them into conflict.
