Abstract

Using extensively available information on heat transfer, construction methods, ventilation, and human transient thermal response, the authors demonstrate the feasibility of the concept of firesafe sanctuaries for high-rise structures. The paper discusses existing evidence in support of the utility of firesafe sanctuaries in conjunction with, or as alternatives to, sprinklers for high-rise structures. Areas of investigation that will either confirm the feasibility of the firesafe sanctuary concept or remove it from further consideration are pointed out.
