Abstract

Traffic network control has been under extensive research in recent years. Efforts and results are diversified in many respects, mainly because of the various mathematical models selected to describe the network, the different prediction techniques, if any, and the stated objectives. In this paper we discuss the merits and shortcomings of traffic control concepts and algorithms that have appeared in major publications. Starting with an isolated intersection and continuing to arterials and networks, all dicussions are in terms of the mathematical model, the prediction, and the optimization of objectives. Some current network control programs in progress are also addressed.
