Abstract

This paper compares the effectiveness in winter of snow tires with studs, without studs, and with controlled protrusion studs; elastomeric tire attachments and reinforced steel tire chains; and standard bias-belted highway tires. Correlations between each wheel combination and temperature variation were obtained from each set of tests for the following conditions: Locked-wheel stopping from 35 mphs on clear ice, sanded ice, and wet asphalt; breakout speed on a course designed to simulate a lane-change manuever on clear ice; and starting traction on clear ice and packed snow.
