Abstract

An account is given of specific and nonspecific hand injuries sustained by athletes and their treatment. Tendon and capsular ligament injuries and metacarpal and phalangeal fractures are considered. A personal series of 44 patients with sports injuries treated between January 1986 and December 1989 is also presented. Excellent results were obtained in 38 cases (86%) with complete anatomical and functional recovery and resumption of sport with no deficiency within 60 days from the type of injury. Good and fair results were observed in the remaining 4 and 2 cases (9.1% and 4.9%). The conclusion is drawn that sports injuries should always be treated promptly to secure the anatomical reinstatement of the injured structure. Consideration should also be given to the fact that high-level athletes need to resume training as quickly as possible.
