Abstract

As a result of the debate concerning powdered road-dust caused by studded tires, the use of studded tires was totally prohibited by law in Japan from April 1, 1991. Consequently, both producing and selling of studded tires have also been prohibited. In accordance with this legislation, research and development of studless snow tires have now concentrated on this problem of powdered road-dust, with studless snow tires increasingly being used. This paper will first summarize the problems caused by powdered road-dust, followed by an introduction of the basic technology of tread patterns and rubber compounds as well as the most advanced technological aspects and current trends. Finally, performance of tires on passenger cars will be briefly covered.
