Abstract

This one year study of injury accidents reveals that in Kuwait the predominant type of injury accidents is that involving pedestrians, and the group with the greatest risk of sustaining injury is the young adult male showing peaks between 20 and 29 years. Looking at the injured from the angle of road usage shows a nearly equal distribution among drivers (33.0 percent), passengers (33.2 percent) and pedestrians (28.5 percent). Injury accidents constitute part of the pool of those susceptible to motor vehicle deaths and the fact that the young adult male runs the greatest risk is of special interest as this group is the economically most active segment of the population in this culture. It is also unfortunate that children under 15 years constitute a significant proportion (21.5 percent) of the pool of injuries. This is due to arrogant driving within the confines of residential areas, overcrowding of familes in apartment buildings and the lack of sufficient playing space for children in most residential places. Certain steps specifically important for the road safety of children need to be taken, especially with regard to pedestrian walks, bicycling, school buses and play grounds.
